• Continues Mel’s meditation on violence (and beauty- this film is quite stunning to look at)- braveheart and apocalypto
  • I wasn’t as high on Garfield (who I think is a great actor) as many critics and didn’t see him as a top 5 of the year best actor nom quality
  • Again, stunning photography- particularly in the visceral action sequences (that on top of reminding me of saving private ryan also remind me of some of the gorgeous sequences in Minghella’s cold mountain (2003)—the flamethrower shots are particularly beautiful
  • Clearly not CGI extras which is nice to see
  • The writing is too on the nose in parts—one example is when “hey isn’t that the coward?” (sic) when Garfield is saving someone. That makes better for the trailer than the movie when he hasn’t been called that by anyone except that one time by his adversary in the training camp
  • Recommend- not in top 10 of 2016
