Michael Mann. Mann not only has a trio of great films, a giant masterpiece, but has really done excellent chic and distinctive work in a genre that has been overloaded with anonymous and identically disappointing entries in the last 20-30 years. It’s not that collateral, public enemies and miami vice are ridiculously great films- but they are 100% Michael Mann- which means they are slick, intelligent, exercises in style and meticulous filmmaking.

best film:  heat. I don’t think there’s a realistic challenger here to one of the best films of the 1990’s. It’s a modern crime epic told with total style and polish. It’s as much Mann’s take on the genre as say Leone’s on the western.

most overrated:  ali. I really had to dig for this one. TSPDT 21st century list expanded to include a lot more films and they have it as the 39thbest film of 2001 and I think that’s overrated.

most underrated: His big 3 films from the 1990’s are all underrated. Heat is at #386 but that’s 300 slots underrated. The bigger travesty is that, for the time being, neither last of the Mohicans or the insider are in the top 1000. That’s incorrect.

gem I want to spotlightthe last of the mohicans. I saw this, collateral and public enemies again recently prepping for blackhat and it’s another film that I wish I was around for in 1992 to see in theatre because the bluray is a stunner. It’s not only superior to dances with wolves, but I believe superior to braveheart and gladiator.

stylistic innovations/traits: “Slick” is the first world that comes to mind when I think of Mann. He’s a visual stylist for a penchant for modernist design previously called “mtv aesthetics” and like Ridley Scott and many on this list is known as a style over substance guy. Sign me up. You can’t help but also think of him when you think of the digital expansion in recent years which I have mixed feelings about (I wouldn’t have mixed feelings if everyone did it as well as Mann). I guess the only problem with that is that his best films came in the 1990’s on film. His films are almost all ultra- suave neo-noirs
