Nolan.  Christopher Nolan is the best director to have his first archiveable film in the 21st century. I think for the purposes of this list Nolan’s weakness is that 4 of his best 5 films have come since 2008. I just need a little time to catch up here! He’s also the best director (I believe) that doesn’t have a film that would make a decade-end top 10 list (though inception could be that film when the 2010’s decade is all said and done). He’s prolific and ambitious which is certainly rare in recent post-kubrick cinema. Quite a treat.

best film:   inception— a perfect melding of narrative and visual form.

most overrated:   there’s absolutely nothing overrated by critics on Nolan

most underrated: risesInception is ranked #9 of 2010 on TSPDT which is just silly but it’s still way better than 34th for the dark knight rises which is where it’s ranked from 2012. There’s absolutely no way that’s the 34th best film of the year.

gem I want to spotlight:   rises. I’m actually leaving the door open that this might be Nolan’s 2nd best film so far. Rises doesn’t have the narrative strength of 2008’s film and it doesn’t have ledger etching his permanent place in film history but I can’t deny that visually it has some advantages.

stylistic innovations/traits:   Nolan has a real fascination with narrative that often have to do with identity or meditations on memory. He’s also phenomenal at parallel editing sequences and increasing massive (and gorgeous) set pieces. I think he’s also firmly established now as a cold and cerebral auteur (and box office champ which I think biases some critics against him) but McConaughey, Ledger, Dicaprio, Bale and others have all done really good work in his films so clearly he can direct actors as well.
