Herzog. Herzog has almost equal importance in the documentary community but of course that’s not counted here. I’m a much bigger fan of his Kinski collaborations than TSPDT and not as sure on his work with Bruno S. Of course here I rated Herzog better than his compatriots from the New German Cinema era. His best films are just better than Fassbinder but that could change over time as they are already close now and I have more work to do on Fassbinder. Aguirre is a giant masterpiece and fitzcarraldo is one of the best films of the 1980’s.

best film:   Aguirre, the Wrath of God. I wish Herzog had done more and better fiction work in the last 30 years but I highly doubt he would ever do anything to top Aguirre.

most overrated:   the enigma of kaspar hauser- #449 all-time on TSPDT. I don’t have a big problem here and I’m overdue for a revisit. Still, this is easily 400 slots too high for me. Herzog’s work with Bruno S. is so weird…even for Herzog.

most underrated: fitzcarraldo  #421-all-time on TSPDT? No way. I’m not sure it’s a top 100 film anymore (I wrote a long poorly-spelled and poorly-graded paper in college on this, Aguirre and Herzog). You’ve got to see this film. It’s astonishing and easily one of the best 150 films of all-time a masterpiece.

gem I want to spotlight:   nosferatu. Remaking murnau’s work is blasphemy but it’s hard to argue with this exquisite film and another dynamite pairing of herzog and kinski.

stylistic innovations/traits:   Bizarre and eccentric… Herzog’s films feel unscripted (some of them were) and adventurous (his top 2 films are actual stories of adventures and quite an adventure in the making of the film as it would turn out). His oeuvre is filled with miraculous landscapes. I guess it’s no surprise he decided to remake murnau— in the top 3 films on my list Herzog was very clearly and unapologetically trying to make the best film of all-time. I love that about him and his films. Ambition.
