WKW. For the purposes of this list his strengths are his two giant masterpieces and the fact that he is certainly a “style-plus” director. It’s hard to match his 1-2 punch of in the mood for love and chungking express. His weakness is his overall filmography and since he’s 57 and he’s only got 8 films in the archives and only half of those are in their years’ top 10 I’m worried about his permanent position on this list.

best film:   in the mood for love. Scroll down to the stylistic innovation/traits section- this film has got it all and it haunts me for weeks if not months after every time I see it. It continues to move up my 00’s decade list and all-time list.

most overrated:   happy together– #337 all-time on TSPDT. I’ve only seen it once and we all know WKW’s films need more room to breathe than that. However, after one pass I think the #337 ranking has as much to do with the groundbreaking-ness of the story/narrative as it does with WKW’s direction.

most underrated: chungking express. It’s not wildly underrated but it’s at #219 on TSPDT and there’s no way there’s 218 better films.

gem I want to spotlight:   days of being wild. If you haven’t seen it check it out. It’s really the beginning all of the stylistic traits used in chungking and in the mood. The three could be a trilogy.

stylistic innovations/traits:   This is where you can go crazy with WKW and have fun. His films have evocations of memory and regret. He’s known for his virtuoso camerawork with director of photography Christopher Doyle, split storylines, and elliptical storytelling. He’s avant-garde with his slow motion, jump cuts, fragmented images, formal repetition of music, drenched color tones and use of neon. He’s a wonderful auteur.
