Eisenstein. I’d probably have Eisenstein over murnau if I thought Potemkin was closer to sunrise. As you’ll see below I don’t have a ton of Eisenstein films in the archives but they all have really good grades, certainly “style-plus” direction, and come with a consistent aesthetic. Eisenstein is, to my knowledge, correctly known as the master of the montage style- film art made in the editing room- and the Odessa steps scene in Potemkin in particular is an all-time genuine stylistic landmark. Griffith may be the father of parallel editing and others are fantastic editors (from Leone, to Truffaut, to Stone, Nolan and Fincher) but Eisenstein is still face you see when you think of editing.

best film: battleship potemkin. Editing is such an important part of the cinematic language and Eisenstein is the first person I think of. Potemkin is his greatest example of this aesthetic.

most overrated: battleship potemkin. I actually really like Potemkin. I just have it close to 75th of all-time now and it seems like as new films from the 00’s enter my cannon it seems inevitable it’ll get pushed closer and closer to the bottom. TSPDT has it as #13 so obviously that’s a huge disparity.

most underrated: strike. I have strike as a strong must-see film. It’s an obvious precursor to Potemkin and although it’s not as polished, it’s actually not far off in quality. It’s a wonderful film.

gem I want to spotlightalexander nevsky- the “battle on the ice” is a very famous scene. It was copied (homage) by branagh in henry V. It’s simply masterful editing on display.

stylistic innovations/traits:   Nobody in cinema is as synonymous  with editing as Eisenstein. I actually think I disagree with sarris who says its murnau’s moving camera that has proved to be the greater innovation. I just think sunrise is better than potemkin by a pretty wide margin.
