Murnau. It’s hard not to think that if Murnau hadn’t died in a car accident at age 42 it wouldn’t be him in Lang’s spot or higher- even perhaps in the top 10. It was an early word but he was a master of cinematography (both the Oscar version (mostly meaning photography) of the word and the true bordwell definition). The fact that he made the best silent film in my opinion yet there is a strong debate about whether nosferatu is actually his masterpiece should tell you a lot about the strength of murnau’s case to be on this list. The Last Laugh and Faust are absolutely fantastic films as well.

best film: sunrise. I’ve revisited this and chaplin’s city lights recently as well as eisenstein’s potemkin and I’m pretty sure murnau’s masterwork is the crowning achievement of the silent era.

most overrated:   tabu. I can’t get behind this being #230 of all-time like TSPDT. Unlike the rest of his work it’s almost like you have to shut your brain off on this one and enjoy the images. But I’m due for a second visit.

most underrated: nosferatu. It’s not wildly underrated (#125 all-time) but I’m pretty sure this will be in my top 100 the next time I do it.

gem I want to spotlightnosferatu. Early (though not the earliest- that would go to the cabinet of dr. caligari)) masterpiece of german expressionism, a triumph of mise-en-scene (which may be redundant saying that because the term is almost hand in hand with german expressionism) and a seminal landmark film in the horror genre.

stylistic innovations/traits:  Murnau is often cited as the father of camera movement. Sarris would argue “Murnau’s influence on the cinema has proved to be more lasting than Eisenstein’s. Murnau’s moving camera seems a more suitable style for exploring the world than does Eisenstein’s dialectical montage.” I’m not 100% sure about that and as you’ll see Eisenstein isn’t far behind Murnau on my list but I’ll take sunrise over Potemkin and nosferatu over ivan the terrible and strike or anything Eisenstein or any other early master produced as their best and 2nd best films.
