Kubrick. Kubrick was the one I was going back and forth with for the #1 slot. I don’t think I would’ve felt this strongly about his case for #1 if it weren’t for my elevation of 2001 in recent years (I now believe it’s my #3 film of all-time). Crazily enough just 10 years ago it was #14 (bluray plays a big part here).

Best film: 2001. Not much more I can add. It’s very close to the perfect film. Clockwork Orange is a fine choice as well and a brilliant film.

Most overrated: Easy choice for me: Lolita. I have it as a simple recommend that can’t find it’s way into the top 10 of 1962 and the TSPDT consensus has it as #705 of all-time.  That said, I like the film.

most underrated:  TSPDT adores Kubrick so this is difficult.  I’d have to go with clockwork.  TSPDT has it as kubrick’s 4th best film at #86 all-time (wow!). I think it’s his 2nd best and closer to the top 25-30ish all-time now.

gem I want to spotlight: I’ll pick the shining and dr. Strangelove in a tie. We talk a ton about genre cinema on this email chain and rightly so. I love genre cinema. And Kubrick, with his 3rd and 5th best films made one of the best comedies and horror films (if not the best) of all-time. Wow! You could really make a case for him as a genre artist with him also defining the sci-fi genre (2001. clockwork) and adding to the war genre (full metal, paths of glory, heist/noir (the killing), epic (Spartacus).

stylistic innovations/traits: Like Hitchcock there is just too much to choose from. Experts and cinema lovers could (and have) put together supercuts highlighting his use of mise-en-scene, consistent themes in his films, use of music, etc. He may be the greatest technician in the history of cinema and is perhaps cinema’s greatest overall perfectionist. And how about “event cinema”? Every Kubrick movie from 1968 to 1999 was an event.

Additional notes: I actually have more masterpieces (6) for Kubrick than Hitchock (5). Fair or not (I could see myself changing my mind in the future) I gave Hitchcock the edge because of the similarities in his work and masterpieces. I adore dr Strangelove and 2001 but it’s hard to see too many similarities (relative to the great auteurs at this, the highest level, which is what we’re talking about here). Hitch also had a ton of must-see films (6 to kubrick’s 2)- Amazing note here to end with– Kubrick ended his career with 7 films: Masterpiece, Masterpiece, Masterpiece, Masterpiece, Masterpiece, Must-See, Masterpiece….boom… drop the mic…walk off stage.
