best film: The Apartment is a weak #1 for the 31st best actress of all-time but it’s still an absolutely marvelous film and among Wilder’s finest (I have it fourth). I have Some Came Running right there (Minnelli’s second best) so it’s not The Apartment here by a wide margin.

best performance:  The Apartment. MacLaine’s “Fran Kubelik” is on par with Jack Lemmon’s more famous character “C.C. Baxter” from the 1960 masterpiece but both are sublimely perfect here in this romance.

stylistic innovations/traits: MacLaine is the older sister of Warren Beatty and the sort of kid sister mascot of the Rat Pack (worked with Sinatra and Dean Martin in Some Came Running and Ocean’s 11 but she’s surely an extremely accomplished actress as well with a talent for excelling at both comedy and tragedy in equal measure (sometimes in the very same scene). She’s regarded well for her work in the Apartment (and rightly so) and Terms of Endearment. She won an Oscar for Terms and both films won best picture, but a major reason I have her as high as I do is Some Came Running. She’s the soul of that film.

directors worked with: Nobody more than once but we had Wilder, Minnelli, Fosse, Ashby, Linklater and Mike Nichols here.
