best film: The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp. I’m anxious to see if this stays above the other Powell and Pressburger films on my ranking (I have it slightly above films like Kerr’s Black Narcissus, Peeping Tom, A Matter of Life and Death and The Red Shoes) with another study and pass thru their oeuvre. It’s a masterpiece, and I’m confident of that so this is a fine film for Kerr to hang her hat on as her singular best film… as would be…

best performance:    Black Narcissus where she’s just extraordinarily good and clearly a stronger part of the film’s worth than Colonel Blimp. She’s centered, and the film’s narrative vehicle (much like The Innocents which is a really close #2 here) into this exotic world. It’s excellent work.

stylistic innovations/traits:  Kerr was nominated for six Academy Awards and five of them aren’t anywhere to be found on my top 5 performances below here. That should give you some idea of the quality work she did from 1943-1964. She’s in two of Hollywood’s most iconic 1950’s films (From Here to Eternity (which includes that famous scene of her on the beach with Burt Lancaster) and An Affair to Remember), two of the best films from “The Archers”, and one of the best British gothic horror movies of all-time (The Innocents).

directors worked with: Powell (2)- so key for her with those two early masterpieces even if it was the 1950’s where she racked up all of her Oscar noms… John Huston once
