best film: Technically it’s Nashville but that literally is a cameo (though I think Altman’s cameos here are a bit more fun than others) so I’m not counting it. The other three masterpieces Christie is in aren’t in my top 100 and they’re very close together. I think I’d give the edge to McCabe & Mrs. Miller over Doctor Zhivago and Don’t Look Now but all three are right there clumped together.  Christie is masterful in McCabe.

best performance:  Doctor Zhivago’s Laura. What a character and performance. Christie is luminous—I’m not sure an actor or actresses was ever so well-lit (or suited to lighting) as David Lean lights Christie here as Omar Shariff’s tragic love. Shariff is solid and Rod Stieger and Tom Courtenay absolutely kill it in their limited screen time—but I think it’s Christie who walks off with the best overall performance in the film. She’s strong, resilient.

stylistic innovations/traits: Stealing from the internet here but apparently Al Pacino called Christie “the most poetic of all actresses”. Christie exploded on the scene in 1965 at age 25 to win best actress for Darling and be the lead in the much anticipated Lawrence of Arabia follow-up epic from David Lean (which made an avalanche of money (2nd most in 1965 behind Sound of Music) and was nominated for 10 Oscars). She transitioned well from old Hollywood (1960’s) to New Hollywood (1970’s with Ashby, Roeg ,Altman, Beatty) with a quick stop in-between to work with Truffaut and the French New Wave. In the 1990’s and 00’s she gave singularly brilliant performances in Afterglow and Away From Her even if the films couldn’t manage to be on their respective year’s top 10’s.

directors worked with: Altman (2 counting Nashville) and then Roeg, Ashby, Truffaut, Lean, and Cuaron.
