It’s visually unspecial (time out London calls it “visually plain”) and adores it as most critics do
It’s really a sprawling character and relationship study comedy/drama built on the strength of the acting- which is great—not really an auteur film at all
There are two scenes that near on transcendence and putting this film beyond just the acting/writing- it’s the poster scene and the Whitney Houston scene- I just wish there was anything going on visually or formally
Sandra Huller and Peter Simonischek are really solid in the two leads
Really disappointed given the buzz and metacritic score (93)
@Drake- I’m completing my list of the “great” films of the 2010s ( I want a top 100 but i dont know, maybe its gonna be more or less ) so expect me to send you messages very often because I want your opinion.
I tried so hard to put this film in my list. I try hard with every critically acclaimed movie because I always say ” ok, I’m missing something here ” but this one, I mean I can’t understand the love for it, I surely enjoyed it and I think it’s a really good film but I can’t recognize the artistic achievement here, remember it’s a film many critics think it’s the best of the year and many others have it in the top 10. Here in Greece it’s probably the most acclaimed movie of the year. I think that acclaim comes from the film’s message but us we both agree the film style is more important. Why do you think it has gotten so much acclaim ?
I know you want Drakes opinion but allow me to give mine.
Your list should be very similar to TSPDT top 1000. However, it’s okay not to like a film or 2. Drake has the Pornographer in his top 50 and I was shocked to find it isnt even on tSPST top 2000!. Maybe Toni (2016)is a similar movie for you.
@Cinephile– with the caveat that I’ve only seen it this once (March 2017)– this one baffles me. I don’t see it. I have it as the most overrated film of 2016 http://thecinemaarchives.com/2018/03/09/2016/
“Toni Erdmann currently sits at #2 on the consensus list and I’d be at least #15 or lower if I placed it right now. I think it’s a good comic/drama with solid acting and an intelligent screenplay but I don’t see the aesthetic or formal achievement.”

@Azman- Thanks, I fully agree with you. It’s not that I don’t like it, I like it pretty much, but it’s not a movie deserving ” great status “.
