Allen uses the same hand-held camera style here he used so effectively in husbands and wives from the prior year
Lighter fare- even for allen- influenced heavily by double indemnity (seen in film) but more appropriately, in tone, by the thin man and many of the loy and powell films in the 30’s. It makes for a great pairing with the comedic talents of Keaton and allen- who worked so successfully together in 6 films from 1972-1979 (their last film together prior to this)—5 of those 6 directed by allen and 5 of those 3 ½ of those (annie hall) were straight comedies
Weird elderly neighbors in manhattan apartment who invite themselves over for dinner have to remind you of rosemary’s baby
To date – the last pairing of allen and Keaton
the shot of the MET is absolutely gorgeous- wonderful lighting—dp is carlo di palma
it’s an intriguing premise and great to see these talented actors (Keaton and allen aided by alda and angelica huston)
gorgeously shot finale shootout with the mirrors sequence—quite a technical feat even if it is lifted from welles and the lady from shanghai
Recommend but not in or that close to the top 10 of 1993
