• It’s strong work from Attenborough and John Hurt—for both actors it puts a stop gap in the long time between archiveable films. For Attenborough he previously had gone from Sand Pebbles in 1966 to Jurassic Park in 1993- wow. For Hurt it was previously A Man For All Seasons in 1966 to Midnight Express in 1978
  • It’s a true-life crime and Fleischer’s dedication to that is admirable. We not only have the “true story” preface but that they are using actual facts and testimony when available. It was filmed on location partly
  • An engaging narrative and character- grim and nihilistic. Attenborough is superb as the infinitely creepy John Christie serial killer. Piercing beady eyes—creepily pushing aside the curtain- cold
  • Hurt is dumb as a box of rocks- easily manipulated and highly reactionary- Christie’s opposite
  • A sad tragic dark film
  • Recommend but not near the top of 1971
