Equinox Flower – 1958 Ozu
- Ozu’s first color film—very heavy on the reds mostly—but pops of orange, green and yellow as well- it’s a fascinating film
- Train station opening after an establishing shot of the city—then we go to a wedding and right away I noticed the orange-filled drinking glasses at the table to match the wallpaper
- The red teapot is everywhere
- Ozu also uses flowers here to block and clutter his mise-en-scene
- There’s one particularly interesting staging where he uses two rooms, at different depths, and each has a table on it and they create a plateau almost in contrast
- great shot of green chairs

- A narrative meditation on marriage and expectations- a generational gap between father and his daughter—he plays mediator to relationships (his friend is Ryu and he has trouble with his daughter, too) but struggles at his own- he’s arrogant, stubborn and proud—hypocritical
- Gorgeous shot of a red lamp and phone- stunning
- The luna bar signage alley shot is a standout

- A shot on the green golf course—has red and yellow flag on the hole
- Orange pop again later

- Ryu has a few scenes- one of them is a beautiful war song at the reunion— only Ozu could talk about and do war nostalgia and not sound insane

- Colorful laundry is great— and then the ending is very good- we have him on a train, singing softly, and then the train going by from the exterior
