  • It doesn’t have the overarching formal visual pleasures of little miss sunshine– dayton and faris previous archiveable effort but it’s a return to the archives and return to form
  • I absolutely love the foggy haze ethereal love story going on shot in claustrophobic close ups.
  • The directors are dedicated to capturing the era and succeed—from the fantastic poster (granted I have no idea if they had a hand in that at all) to the music, the costume, and hair—it’s well done all around and many films fail at this level—this is well-earned and detailed
  • Besides the love scenes I noted before the close-up aesthetic is chosen over and over again and it pays off with the tremendous lead actors Emma stone and Steve Carrell
  • Stone is the singular standout and star nailing the nuances of billy jean king and the captain phillips-like post-traumatic after match breakdown scene is one of my favorites
  • In the archives but won’t be near my top 10 of 2017

  • It’s clearly  no better than a “recommend” but I admire the comedic and dramatic talents of the two big stars- Emma Stone and Steve Carrell so so good here
  • I think it’s Travers who comapares the two to Hilary and Donald in 2016- not bad
  • I adore the scene of Carrell at gamblers anonymous and saying they aren’t there because they’re gamblers– they are there because they are terrible gamblers
  • a very winning pop 70’s soundtrack “Crimson and Clover”- Tommy James & The Shondells- great scene and song of them falling in love
  • Dayton and Faris should only work with Carrell– this and Little Miss Sunshine
