Battling Butler – 1926 Buster Keaton
- It may be the least (or close) of the 11 archiveable Keaton films made from 1923 to 1929 but they all should be studied and appreciated
- You’ll notice frequently in the titles Keaton puts himself way down the list with the cast in terms of billing—he’s 8th here. haha. The opposite of Chaplin in so many ways “written by, composed by, directed by and starring…”
- Keaton never really tries for your sympathy—here he’s a rich dandy again (highly comedic massive luxurious tent) , a “weakling” as the text suggests
- This is a decade before Harold Lloyd’s boxing movie The Milky Way and five years before Chaplin’s City Lights boxing movie. The comparisons with Chaplin as an actor and physical performer are fascinating. Keaton is a malleable embodiment of dexterity and Chaplin is a brilliant sort of dancer
- The tiny little chauffeur is hilarious
- Certainly lacks the set piece genius-level work that accompanies the best of his films
