Best Directors in the World 2019

Here’s my annual stab at listing and ranking the best directors on the planet. Usually I look at the last 10 years’ worth of work with a heavy emphasis on even more recent work in Nolan (1)– Roma and Cuaron was the only thing in 2018 with enough power to possibly knock off Nolan for the #1 slot and I just can’t do it. I have Roma over Dunkirk slightly but only slightly and the combined efforts of Inception, Dark Knight Rises and Interstellar trump Gravity pretty handedly. Best Actors in the World- 2018

Ryan Gosling (3)- I’ll take Gosling’s 1-2 punch in La La Land and Blade Runner 2049 over any actor’s 1-2 punch in the last five years. Take a look—but nobody had given performances on that level in great films like Gosling has. I think he’s the first actor besides Dicaprio to hold the top slot in quite some time (I think as far back as 2011). Leonardo Dicaprio (1)- The Revenant may be his best work, and god I love Dicaprio, but he’s taken a few years off now- so all we have in the last 5 years is Wolf

Best Actresses in the World- 2018

Emma Stone (2)- Stone moves past Amy Adams for two reasons: A. Adams biggest year in recent memory (2013 with American Hustle and some great scenes in Her is one more year in the rearview) and B. Stone was great in The Battle of the Sexes here in 2017. While that wasn’t a top 10 film it’s still more than Adams could contribute to her list of archiveable films in the last year Amy Adams (1)- As I said above Adams drops one spot here this year but Arrival was only last year and being great in a top 10

Best Directors in the World 2018

Here’s my annual stab at listing and ranking the best directors on the planet. Usually I look at the last 10 years’ worth of work with a heavy emphasis on even more recent work in the last 3-5 years. I am a massive believer in the auteur theory so I take into account not only who directed great films but the level of personal visual style and reoccurring themes. Nolan (6)- It took an auteur like Nolan and a film like Dunkirk to supplant Iñárritu for the #1 slot on this list. Dunkirk takes Nolan’s parallel editing (I think

Best Actors in the World- 2017

Leonardo Dicaprio (1)- One year removed from the revenant  he’s still clearly the king. He hasn’t started shooting anything new and had nothing in both 2016 and 2014… hopefully he’s not following DDL’s “less is more” approach. Heads up for this #1 slot next year with gosling doing work with Villeneuve, Malick and perhaps Chazelle again in 2017. Christian Bale (2)- Bale adds knight of cups to his resume since I did this last year. Ryan Gosling (9)- Gosling is the big story here with almost every other actor on last year’s top 10 either skipping the year like Leo or missing

Best Actresses in the World- 2017

Amy Adams (5)- Adams was #1 in 2014 in what is always a tight race for the top slot with these familiar names. Oscar nom or not she gives one of the year’s best performances in one of the year’s best films in arrival. The great performance in nocturnal animals is just a bonus and adds to her body of work. Oddly enough Arrival may be her first solo lead in a top 10 film- something very worthy of praise (it doesn’t happen often enough for female actresses- even great ones- Streep hasn’t had one since 1985). Best Directors in the World 2017

Top 10 Directors Current list Here’s my annual stab at listing and ranking the best directors on the planet. Usually I look at the last 10 years’ worth of work with a heavy emphasis on even more recent work in the last 3-5 years. I am a massive believer in the auteur theory so I take into account not only who directed great films but the level of personal visual style and reoccurring themes. Iñárritu - The back to back masterpieces in 2014 (birdman) and 2015 (the revenant) are impossible for anyone else on this last to match.
