• I’ve now seen both the shortened version and the full 5 hour 34 minute version
  • Assayas is clearly influenced by Algiers- this film is all narrative (which is both good and bad- it’s very interesting but it’s not high art)
  • Makes a point of saying this “has to be considered fiction”- very detailed with the newsreel footage, detailed biography title cards, dates
  • It is a fascinating 5+ hours but not a great stylistic film- can’t separate itself from other well-directed films
  • Mise-en-scene detail- drinking (usually johnny walker) in every scene
  • Not in or near the top 10 of 2010
