• Not a huge deal in the larger scheme of things but I’m with many of the critics that disliked the god-awful title for the film
  • In the oeuvre of Jane Austen films this one has a very nice place of being perhaps the most hilarious, least romantic, and utterly unsentimental (and charmingly so)
  • Love the comic character intros with titles and descriptive captions
  • The Purcell music for the funeral of queen mary (also in clockwork orange) is wonderful
  • Beautiful mise-en-scene and costume design. Gorgeous landscaping and floral work—this is important along with the performances because the film is largely walking and talking
  • It’s a real triumph for beckinsale- beautiful, intelligent and weaving a web
  • It’s still very much a Stillman film – though being an Austen film as well clearly- it’s a very well-developed world
  • Archiveable but not in the top 10, or near it, for 2016
