It’s simply one of the better edited films of the 00’s decade—there is such care and artistic decision and rendering in each transition- it’s really inspired (and funny)
It doesn’t stop at the editing- there’s great freeze frame work and zooms. Yes, it’s meant for partial (if not total in some spots) parody but it works on its own to enhance the narrative (which is solid) and on its own as a purposeful imaginative venture form Wright
I’ve seen it twice and it blew me away the second time. I think with my first viewing I was just so hung up on how it borrows from bad films bad boys II bad 80’s and early 90’s (last action hero) cop movies
Other (better) influences include Eastwood’s Leone films (Pegg on a horse with shotguns on his back), point break, Chinatown
A hilariously patronizing melodramatic string musical score
Pegg’s voice augmentation for comedic effect worth of praise
I’m putting it as a top 10 of the year quality film
Here are my thoughts on the film: (sorry for the lengthy comments. I hope you don’t mind them. I just really like discussing films)-haha.
It’s starts of good but then gets weird for like 15 minutes or so. I was confused, disinterested etc. This was probably intentional to put us in the shoes of Nicholas.
Anyways here’s why I liked it so much. (sorry for the lengthy comments, I just really like discussing films).
1) It’s obviously very well acted. Good characters and a nice ‘study’ of them.
2) Well written. Good narrative.
3) Superb Editing. The scene where they watch bad boys along with the murder is particularly jaw droppingly edited. Though the entire movie is brilliant.
4) Satire about good cities but the dirty work that goes on behind the scenes. A false ‘dream world’
5) Great buddy movie (similar to other buddy films – Toy story etc) and great action film. Uses elements of both genres and satires them at the same time.
6) Influenced by action movies of the 80s. Reminds me of redator and raiders when Nicholas is fighting the man much bigger than he is. Kinda like when Indy was fighting the guy near the plane and Schwarzneggar fighting the Predator.
7) When nicholas is saved by the bulletproof vest, it’s hard not to think about BTTF.haha. The scenes are similar. Maybe BTTF influenced Wright.
8) Youmention all the movies it may have been inspired by. Another one could be High Noon (when Nicholas comes riding back into town on his horse). Maybe the violence and blood was influenced a tiny bit by Dawn of the Dead.
9) The movie was quite funny. However, the one of the best scenes came right after the scene where Nicholas finds out about the ‘cult’. That scene was sad when Nicholas gets stabbed by Danny. But the scene after that was hilarious. The fake ketchup and then Danny says :”Forget it NIcholas, It’s Sandford”. That line was so funny I nearly choked on my food. The film is inspired by Chinatown. The detective story and other aspects.
10) Overall, most aspects of the film are well done. A well made movie overall. I thought it was great!
Good movie, quite funny. I just finished watching the movie.
I have an observation.
Don’t you think that if it’s “one of the better edited films of the 00’s decade” it should be higher?
I will explain what i mean. For example, if you break down the best-edited films of each decade, they are masterpieces.
In the 2010s you have Dunkirk, Mad Max, Inception, in the 90s you have Goodfellas and JFK, in the 70s Apocalypse now, the godfather, in the 80s is raging bull.
I don’t know, maybe i’m being very picky
@Aldo- fair quesiton– the rest of the film (outside of the editing) is not on the level of those other films, and the editing itself isn’t on the level of JFK, Potemkin, Dunkirk
Hey Drake, thanks for the recommendation. I quite enjoyed watching this film.
