• It’s a very good film- funny with strong writing. However, about 45 minutes into the film Ray Romano and Holly Hunter come along and elevate the film—and save it from falling into some of the jokes and cliché genre trappings. There are some very tough and genuine scenes here.
  • Hunter especially is exception here- a whirlwind of intelligence, angst and poignancy. She deserves an Oscar nom and keeps the film safely in the archives– Hunter is such a spitfire “i like wine because of the buzz” and Romano so approachable and genuine– i love his scenes telling bad jokes and talking about forrest gump as the best movie ever
  • all of the supporting actors are superb- not just hunter and romano- but Kumail’s family is excellent- those reoccurring dinner scenes are great. There’s a 1 minute scene with a nurse at the city view hospital that is excellent as well
  • the 9/11 “lost 19 of our best guys” joke is an all-timer. Amazing set up and delivery
  • the 87 on metacritic is a little silly- think they’re clearly grading this on a curve against other romantic comedies
  • won’t be in the top 10 of 2017 or near it but in the archives for now
