The Seven Year Itch – 1955 Wilder
- It’s minor Wilder but an entertaining comedy with solid performances from Ewell and Monroe
- It’s famous and film lore now because of the air vent skirt scene
- She just plays “the girl” in the credits
- It would be the one great performance for Ewell- he’s a talented comedian and was good in a supporting role in adam’s rib in 1949 backing up tracy and Hepburn—the role really wouldn’t work at all with a good-looking star like Sinatra or Cary Grant
- It’s a situation sex comedy—“what would you do if your wife and kids were gone for the summer at the summer house and Marilyn Monroe was house-sitting for the neighbors? Haha
- Riffs the beach scene from from here to eternity quite hilariously
- This isn’t really cinema analysis but the leopard skin dress on Monroe looks like paint
- The surrealism and wandering imagination and fantasy sequences are really the movie- similar to Christmas story or play it again, sam. A very good scene of the wife coming home to catch him and she’s bolstering a gun—the use of cinemascope in the surrealism sequences is key- there’s a dream to one side of the frame and goes in and out. Without these sequences I think the film would seem unsaveably stage-bound
- A broader comedy for wilder— which is not a compliment
- Monroe really is a talented comedian
- Recommend but not in the top 10 of 1955
