The War of the Roses – 1989 DeVito
- Reteams the 3 principal actors of 1984’s romancing the stone– though this is not directed by Zemeckis but DeVito it has much more in common with DeVito’s similarly pitch black comedy throw momma from the train
- Somewhere out there I read the comparison to the marital issues in the shining and I love that as well
- Lots of odd and creative angles from DeVito. Lots of them low-angle shots (insert joke here about him being crazy short). He’s no Orson Welles but I like the experimentation
- He tackled murder in throw momma and now he’s tackling divorce
- Influenced by the screwball comedies like bringing up baby but again goes darker here
- torturing of cats and dogs for the —one great scene where Douglas says “everybody needs a push” and shoves turner’s cat off a chair
- it’s also a situation sitcom-like comedy where a couple going through a divorce, for some pretty contrived reason, are forced to live in the same house
- DeVito uses the voice over and flashback vehicles from noir
- Could do without the monster truck scene
- The comedy and violence escalates as the marriage falls apart—it’s just a damn funny movie
- Not near the top 10 of 1989 but in the archives
- Recommend
