• It’s a sci-fi, and action film but it has roots in noir as well just like Johnson’s brilliant debut Brick from 2005. The voice-over flashback (yeah that’s tough in a time bender) has roots in noir of course
  • Makes several overt attempts to thwart trying to over analyze the time travel rules—I thought that was an interesting tactic
  • The cast is fantastic. JGL gives us a risky “This is a young Bruce Willis” performance and I thought he nailed it. His mannerisms are impeccable—he has him down. Willis is fantastic as is Emily Blunt and the few scenes with Paul Dano
  • A gorgeous montage of the years between JGL’s age and Willis’ age in China. No diegetic sound
  • Even the casting of Willis is a slight nod to 12 monkeys I thought
  • The brilliance of the narrative makes for one of the great narrative achievements of 2012 and Johnson is surely no “point and shoot” director- very talented
  • The “rainmaker” owes a lot to the matrix I thought with “the one”. I see similarities with the action sequence and some of the special effects work in the climax as well
  • The circular “looped” narrative if you will and the smashing climax are very rewarding
  • Recommend/Highly Recommend border- leaning Highly Recommend
