• Like almost all of Ivory’s film’s the ensemble is fantastic, a young Hugh Grant (first archiveable film), Denholm Elliott, Simon Callow (in a key and gorgeous early scene at the beach), Ben Kingsley and a spot appearance by Helena Bonham-Carter
  • Wins at Venice for awards- Oscar nom only for costume (a staple for Merchant Ivory— justifiable praise and appreciation for their eye for mise-en-scene and décor detail
  • Love the shots of Cambridge—establishing mainly- lawns, buildings and campus
  • It’s about the elite- another novel from EM Forster- cricket
  • Gorgeous interlude in sun kissed Greece on location
  • I don’t think Denholm Elliott is nearly as good here as the heavy—he’s much better in an affable, aloof role
  • 140 minutes
  • Alternative lives—an important film in queer cinema history—two lovers that fight their inner feelings at separate points in their life and never connect- tragic—painful
  • There’s a clear adoration and penchant for ambiance for Ivory- costume and detail
  • Recommend but not in the top 10 of 1987
