Shadows and Fog – 1991 Allen
- Woody’s third black and white film- stunning- just like Manhattan and Stardust Memories

- There is such love and thought behind the lighting and set design- it’s a gorgeous film- a nod to German Expressionism- Murnau, Pabst, Lang

- Apparently Woody’s most expensive film to date- a box office bomb
- Great 360 degree shot around the table at the whorehouse
- plays off Jack the Ripper, Vigilantes, Jews, Fascism,
- Lighting of the doctor scene- beautiful
- Great cuckold vs cocksman scene with John Cusack and John Malkovich
- A few zingers- Farrow asks “Does that make me a whore?” and Woody says “only by the dictionary definition”
- Fog and streetlights- a haze of grey, black and shadow

- Light pouring in from behind the bars of a metal fence
- The narrative is messy- feels impromptu and made-up in the worse way- and it just sort of ends—border of the archives but its just too well done visually not to archive- a major achievement for DP Carlo Di Palma
