• It may be an outwardly bad film without Cagney. He’s a dynamo. This is his “dirty rat” film, another rough and tumble Warners film from the early 1930’s. One year after his breakout The Public Enemy
  • In the first 5 minutes Cagney is throwing punches and speaking Yiddish. Haha. Loretta Young says he’s “braying” in the text. Haha
  • Like The Public Enemy he grabs a woman’s face (he actually riffs off it here by pretending to do it (while almost winking at the camera) and then actually does it when he’s upset later
  • A really nice tracking shot going out of the window just after the villain falls to his death
  • It’s all about Cagney’s energy and screen presence
  • It’s 1932 pre-code so we get Young just casually undressing to her nightie in one scene
  • Recommend- not in the top 10 of 1932—it just slaps on a happy ending and cuts short
